Globe gets record Society for News Design awards

March 5, 2020

The Globe and Mail received a record number of awards at the Society for News Design’s recent Best of News Design competition, with at least 25 awards of excellence. The Globe is also one of 11 nominees for World’s Best Designed Newspaper, out of a field of nearly 100 top publications from around the world. We’re up against the likes of The New York Times, Washington Post, Die Zeit and Politiken.

A few noteworthy wins from this year:

Special section design: Press Freedom

This ambitious section-takeover showcased how vital journalism is to a healthy democracy. The evocative use of editorial illustration, photography, graphics, bespoke typography, and a cohesive colour palette, gave the special section an identity of its own.

Overall Opinion section design: Opinion

This is an acknowledgement of Bryan Gee’s (and the entire Opinion team’s) ongoing effort to create a bold, cohesive and unique visual voice for the Opinion section.

Individual News Design Portfolio: Ming Wong

This is one of the more prestigious awards for an art director to receive. It recognizes not only a high calibre of design, but consistency in visual storytelling across a diverse range of subject matter.

Digital/Print Combination: Long way home

This project was built around a photo essay by photographer David Jackson, which follows a small group of Indigenous high-school students in Northern Ontario. This award reminds us of our strength in collaboration amongst the visuals team and the newsroom at large.

Magazine Redesign: Report on Business Magazine

This award confirms that Domenic Macri’s and Brennan Higginbotham’s transformation of the Report On Business magazine brought new life to what was already an industry-leading business magazine design.

The judges were also very impressed by the quality of our Saturday A1s and visually driven news folios.

Winners will be announced at the annual SND workshop in Washington, D.C. in April.
