The Globe and Mail launches The Globe and Mail Foundation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TORONTO, ON - APRIL 14, 2025
The Globe and Mail is proud to announce the launch of a new charitable foundation, The Globe and Mail Foundation, to advance education on matters of public importance, help strengthen public trust in media, and give back to our community.
Building on The Globe’s reputation of providing accurate, balanced, fact-based information, the Foundation will promote strong ethical standards in the field of journalism.
It will ensure journalists have access to education and training opportunities to develop the necessary skills and experience to produce quality journalism. Additionally, it will organize training programs such as a photojournalism academy to develop the skills of photojournalists. It will also support research into topics that help to deepen the Canadian public’s knowledge and understanding of pressing issues of the day.
“With disinformation and misinformation on the rise due to the removal of fact-checking on social media platforms, the increasing fragmentation of media, and the rapid proliferation of AI generated content, the practice of fact-based journalism has never been more at risk,” says Andrew Saunders, President and CEO of The Globe and Mail. “The Foundation will help ensure all Canadians have access to a high standard of fact-based journalism.”
The Foundation will be governed by an independent board of directors, chaired by Phillip Crawley, former CEO and Publisher of The Globe and Mail. Phillip Crawley is an experienced board member having served 20 years on hospital boards, including most recently as Chair of the Sunnybrook Foundation. Phillip Crawley will step down as Chair of the Sunnybrook Foundation in September. We are pleased to have Phillip in this role given his editorial expertise, and his unwavering lifelong commitment to independent journalism.
“I have dedicated much of my career to the pursuit of truth,” says Phillip Crawley. “I cannot think of a more worthwhile endeavour than the protection and promotion of accurate, responsible, fact-based journalism. I am honoured to be the first chair of The Globe and Mail Foundation board.”
Though The Globe and the Foundation will operate independently, the Foundation will partner with The Globe and others on select projects to promote and support the Foundation’s work.
